Bodywork and the nature of the body

How does the body function

Over the past 200 years, the living conditions have changed a lot, compared to those we had thousands of years ago, when the “human animal” evolved as it is today.
The body is therefore subjected to many stressful situations and unhealthy conditions that its nature has been severely distorted. The body is not built to sit down all the day long in front of a computer, nore to be fed by chemical industrial food! It moves away from the naturalness of the movement, assuming a non-functional posture and bad -if not dangerous- habits.
It is every day more urgent to search for deep and natural bodywork, that must be respectful of Mother Nature’s original project: over the centuries, the movement has been built to be efficient, to save energy, to obtain directly the desired result without waste. First of all, the movement has to be re-educated to be very organic, fluid and elegant: animals are naturally elegant, as they move! The correct training for dance makes you move softly without floppyness, and allows you t be aware what muscles to use and how much strength, to move in the most effective way.
If youi train in an healthy and naturl way, the quality of movement and posture improve so surprisingly quickly.

The physiology of the body in motion

The very basic needs of the body in motion are the restoration of the balance, the preservation of the safety of the subjectand the fight against the force of gravity.
To do that, Nature has created certain muscular mechanisms:
1 – muscular chains: muscles are connected in chains of collaboration and harmony, to provide movement the necessary qualities of fluidity and economy to conduct of all the actions in life.
2 – postural antigravity muscles: from a biochemical point of view, some muscles function in a manner as to be able to contract with little effort and for an extended period of time. They are those involved in standing and in walking. Posture errors and bad habits lead to use dynamic muscles instead of postural ones. Dynamic muscles has been designed to develop a big strenght for a short time. Posture has to be sustained all the day long, and it has to rely on muscles suiable for this purpose!
If we use it inproperly, the body is able to function anyway, at the expense of the good of the whole system.
3 – reflex arc: our nervous system has developed some automatic mechanisms, basically aimed to preserve the safety. This mechanism can quickly react as to avoid hazards. For example you hang a pan and you don’t know it has been used very recently and it is still burning. Before you realise that it is too hot, you have already let it fall. The receptors tell the spyne about the heat and the spine nerve ganglia themselves send two informations: one to the arm, to provide stopping as soon as possible the source of danger, another one to the brain, just to let it know.
The body responds with swift actions by itself, without the intervention of the rational will, before it is damaged. This phenomenon explains very well the importance of respecting the physiological mechanisms that still work even beyond the control of our conscious will.
The bodywork must respect these mechanisms in order to provide the dance of important qualities: fluidity, elegance, truly and unique expressiveness.

The breath in the bodywork

Human physiology is based on the fact that the main muscle involved in respiration is the diaphragm. Nowadys life, bad habits, stress, tension and emotional situations lead us to breathe inproperly. Very often the breath is only produced by the accessory  muscles of respiration, and the diaphragm is blocked: breathing is not very effective, in this way.
The conscious use of the breath has to be one of the cardinal points of the bodywork. It obliges us to use the diaphragm in a very active way and to get used to hear the collaboration between the abdominal muscles and breathing.
This produces multiple positive effects:
– An improvement of respiratory capacity, ie the volume of air in the lungs, which makes available more amount of oxygen in the blood.
– Improving the overall body posture: the diaphragm is located right at the base of the rib cage and therefore provides support for the upper body. Moreover, when it contracts automatically it produces the contraction of the pelvic floor muscles and provides excellent support to internal organs.
– Collaboration in the “feeling of the body as a whole”: the diaphragm is like a door that connects the abdominal cavity with the chest. If it does not work properly, it is like a locked door inside our body, in front of which the movement will stop.
– Improvement of the neck posture: if not using the diaphragm, you must use the secondary respiratory muscles, especially those located in the upper chest, which disturb the correct position of the neck and head.

vacanza studio danza in Estonia

Dance trip to Estonia

We will stay at the Spa Hotel Viiking, located along the beach and equipped with a wellness center, beauty salon and spa.
The dance classes are held in a large, bright and charming  top roof Victoria Studio in the hotel, in a pleasant atmosphere, helping concentration, learning and training without any stress, promoting serenity and joy of living.
You can visit the website of Viiking: www.viiking.ee/en

Sabina Todaro uses a particular educational approach developed during her more than 25 years experience of teaching, which starts from the study of anatomy and neurology especially to get a central reinforcement of the body structure to improve efficiency, through a tonic and effective training. Once the body is awakened with various stretching exercises, balance and toning, Sabina accompanies students in search of their expressiveness and their own natural movement, directing them to the archaic language of the dance forms of the Arab world reinterpreted in a contemporary way.
After the class, you will feel that you have worked hard, but without exhaustion: people have an incredible positive life energy that takes them every day towards a feeling of general well-being.
Next to the dance, there is time to enjoy a real holiday relaxation: in Pärnu there is the sea, with wide sandy beaches and secluded beaches, boulevards and parks to go walking and cycling (bike rental is everywhere and cheap), and take care of your wellness area with Finnish sauna, turkish bath, hot and cold water pools, Japanese bath and jacuzzi available to us for free at the hotel and the opportunity to undergo a wide variety of spa treatments, therapeutic and beauty massages at a very very low cost.
The town is very pleasant, walk in the center full of cozy cafes, restaurants and excellent shops, makes us feel on holiday: Parnu is in fact a place well known to the northern Europeans because of its beaches and spas .
The dance course is very intensive in terms of movement and the results in terms of improvement in dance and movement are evident.
Human experience is also very rich and full, and all accompanied by sun, sea, rest, and good company it feels really renewed!

The organization, according to  Tanssiva Aurinko and Helena Metsa’s directions, provides transportation by ferry boat from the port of Helsinki to Tallinn, transport by bus from the port of Tallinn just in front of the main door of Viiking Hotel, the free and open use of the luxorious spa area (saunas, steam rooms, swimming pool, and whirlpools) the hotel provides rich buffet for breakfast 8included in the package.
The hotel offers a huge amount of  beauty treatments: to book them, contact the hotel directly (it is recommended to do so in advance by mail, in English, to be sure to have the possibility to enjoy the sessions required).
Participants must reach the port of Tallinn or Helsinki according to a specific time table that will be specified at the time of enrollment, organize their lunches and dinners and treatments at the beauty and healing centers. For lunch the Hotel provides a cheap and good buffet. The village is full of nice, cheap and rich restaurants where you can choose every kind of international menues.

All classes are taught entirely in English, and the group is international, so the lingua franca is English. Maybe the summer internship can become also an opportunity to learn or brush up your knowledge of the language! If English is not your thing, do not worry: when you share the desire to dance, you understand too! You can be helped in translation by many students and the teacher herself.

An opportunity not to be missed!

Lyrical Arab Dance: the expressive roots of traditional Arabic dance

Lyrical Arab Dance has been created after many years of researches on human movement, the nature of the body, expression and energetical dimension of the musical soul in the Arab and Mediterranean world by Sabina Todaro. Essential contribution to the creation of this method was more than ten years of Hilal Dance experience. Hilal Dance has been created and developped by egyptian dancer and coreographer Suraya Hilal and Alessandro Bascioni.

Sabina is studying and experimenting though travels, readings, dancing, reflections about pedagogy and mostly by searching the neurological and anatomical human nature, looking for the authenticity and spontaneity in dance.

Beyond the western stereotype of orientalism, to approach Arabic artistic culture leeds us to understand the expressive core of Arab dance and music, which is joy of living, welfare, willing to communicate and celebrate beyond the shallowness of the momentary feelings, recognizing ourselves in hour own humanity.

Lyrical Arab Dance session is based on energetical workout especially designed to center, strengthen and lengthen the body, to find its naturale expressiveness, widening and multiplying the possibilities to communicate with ourselves, the group around us, music and space.

We can explore in this way hour expressive potential without judgement, with joyfulness.
For the Arabs dance and music are never occasions to show off how virtuoso you are. They simply speak to human essence, from heath to heart

The Middle East is a place with very rich music and dance traditions. Westerners have created a whole range of exotic fantasies related to Orientalism myth. Explore this artistic culture first-hand, with practical and realistic examples leads us to better understand the nature of the Mediterranean culture. Knowing genres, styles, eras, helpsus to go beyond the banality of commercial forms, entering the expressive heart of the Arab sensibility. Dance means joy, health, love of life and communicate. Willing to share, to celebrate, to be with each other beyond the momentary and personal situations, recognizing themselves in their humanity.

The lesson consists of energetic and physical exercises designed to reinforce, extend and center the body to make it supple and expressive, expanding and multiplying the possibilities of movement and communication with them, with the group, with the music and with space. Thus fully express their potential, without judgment, with joy.

The Arab world live dance and music in this way: they are never virtuosic moments in themselves, or self-congratulation, nor as a means of expression of their momentary reality, but they speak to the essence of man, from heart to heart .

For this reason Sabina created the portal www.musicaedanzaorientale.it dedicated to all aspects of music and dance in the Arab world, with downloadable items at your disposal: culture is the heritage of all!
